Progress on 1955 Briggs Model 5S
The 1954 Model 5S ran into issues. Broken rings to be exact.
So I've moved on to the '55
This is what I started with. It turns but is rough.
This is the cleaned block. Everything has been disassembled for cleaning and inspection. All the internal parts look good. I will need to reseat the valves and hone the cylinder. It was a little rusty. About half full of water when I opened it up.
The cylinder cleaned up nice with just a light honing.
Perfect flywheel. Not a fin nicked.
Date code cast into the flywheel "55" "E" agrees with the Serial Number to say this engine was manufactured the 5th month of 1955.
One of the things missing off this engine were the links that go from the top of the blower housing to the head. I make new ones out of some scrap 12Ga steel. They will be riveted on with drive rivet to match the original design
Here we're about ready for paint.
All the critical surfaces are masked then painted. I use Duplicolor Engine Enamel with ceramic.

And Now The Assembly Work
Before I started to reassemble the engine I checked to be sure there was spark. There wasn't. The condenser was bad, so I improvised a replacement.
The valve tappets and camshaft are installed first.
Next comes the crankshaft. The timing marks are just barely visible in this picture.
Piston installed. It went in a whole lot easier than it came out!
Connecting rod in, bearing cap screws torqued to 100In/Lbs and locked.
Here the valves and breather have been installed. Valve clearance checked out OK
This is me trying to look innocent when my wife came down and discovered oily fingerprints all over her new digital camera. Opppps!
Flywheel mounted and torque to 55Ft/Lbs
Head and blower housing are on. Head bolts torqued to 140In/Lbs
FINISHED
