Shocking Pictures

OK, I'm not sure it this was testing a magneto for spark, or just goofing off with the camera.  At any rate there is no doubt when an old Briggs magneto is working properly. As the short video above shows, that will make lightning.  This mag is on a 1953 Briggs 5S engine.

This engine was given to me by Kevin, who bought one of my old lathes.  It looks to be complete, and has good compression.  With just a quick cleaning of the points, it has enough of a spark to feel.  Thanks Again Kevin! The feedback I've received says this engine was build in 1936 or 1937.

Power Products ???

I believe this engine was made by Power Products in the late 40's to early 50's.  All I know about it for sure is that it is a 2 cycle and it's seized up. Hopefully I can gather more information on it once it arrives. I should have it here in about a week.

More Reel Mowers

(acquired 06/17/2006)

I just happened to click onto a local ISP Classified Ads page the other day.  First ad under Farm Equipment was for these three reel mower.  $30 for all three.  Couldn't pass that up!  The one on the left is a 1949 Rocket Eclipse. I have it running and it cuts.  The middle one is a Moto Mower with a Clinton engine.  I have it running running, but the frame casting is broken on one side so it won't cut until I repair that.  The have no idea what the one on the right is.  All I know for sure is that the engine was manufactured January of 1950.  The 5S recoil start engine is seized up.  It may be awhile until I get to it because I have the 1935 Briggs Model Y in pieces on the restoration table right now.

Click the film icon above for short videos of the running mowers.

This will be my next project.  It's a 1935 Model Y.  It won't turn over completely.  Most likely a stuck valve. Other than that it looks pretty much complete.  It is missing the starter clutch cover.

The first engine I ever restored was a 1956 Briggs 6BH.  I sold it on e-Bay and regretted it later.   I just found this one to replace it in my collection. This one was manufactured in January of 1957.  I don't know why it has strapping around the fuel tank, but we'll be doing away with that.

                                           1956 Briggs 6BH

(finished 09/15/2005)

This is the one that started it all. It is a 1956 Briggs & Stratton model 6B-H An aluminum block engine that was used mostly on rotary mowers.  It was my first restoration,  and the only engine I've ever sold.  I sold it on an eBay auction,  and shipped it to the winning bidder in another country.  I regret it, and have been looking for another one ever since.  I truly doubt I'll ever sell another one.

The next engine I did was this 1954 Briggs & Stratton Model 6B-HS  One of the earliest mass produced aluminum block engine. I recently found the picture above of a 6B-HS on a mower listed on e-Bay.  My guess at the color looks to be pretty close.     The bottom picture shows it as I found it in a local scrap yard.  I picked it up for the aluminum scrap value of $5.00  A real treasure from the junk heap.

This is a 1940 Briggs Model WMB washing machine engine  It is missing some parts,  has a couple broken fins on the flywheel and the carburetor is cracked.   This one will definitely be a challenge!   Many of the parts form a 5S are interchangeable.  I'm thinking the 1954 5S that I have restored is about to become a donor.

Vespa Piaggio Moped

(updated 04/23/2006)

This is an old Vespa Piaggio moped. How old? I haven't a clue.  All I know about it for sure at this point is, it's rough!  Missing a few parts, and the 49cc 2-Stroke engine is locked up.  I'll start with the engine and go from there.

Up to this point in time all of my work has been in the restoration of the old engines listed below.  I'm thinking of trying something new. Like building something to carry an old engine around.  This little platform has raised my interest.  What do you think?  Should I try it?
